Zingiber zerumbet – Shampoo Ginger (email for availability)

This is an unusual but easy-to-grow tropical landscape plant in the ginger family. In the summer, stalks grow out of the ground, and on the end of them are these green pine-cone-like bracts that turn pinkish red with age. This plant is known as shampoo ginger because when the bracts are gently squeezed, a nicely ginger-scented liquid comes out.

Ships in a 1gallon pot (6″ pot). Does not come with flowers.

Description

This is an unusual but easy to grow landscape ginger known as Shampoo Ginger and Pinecone ginger. It grows best in partial sun to bright filtered light and likes average moisture. It grows really fast and can spread out quite a bit. It can grow in a container as well. It can get anywhere from 4′ – 7′ tall. In the summer, stalks grow out of the ground and on the end of them are these green pine-cone like bracts. As the bracts age, they turn pinkish red and then light yellow flowers emerge from them. This plant is known as “shampoo” ginger because when the bracts are gently squeezed, a nicely ginger scented liquid comes out. This liquid is known to be used as a shampoo, body-wash, lotion and ingredients in commercial shampoos. The inflorescence makes a very nice cut flower that lasts a long time. This ginger does go dormant in the winter. It is native to Southeast Asia.
