Kaempferia galanga has several common names including Peacock Ginger, Kencur, Aromatic Ginger, Sand Ginger, Galangal, Lesser Galangal, Cutcherry, and Resurrection Lily. This is not to be confused with Alpinia galanga also known as Galangal.
This tropical plant is in the ginger family and it is edible. The rhizomes are used to season Asian dishes and they are also used for medicinal purposes. The leaves are also used in Asian cooking.
Kaempferia are good container plants for shade. Freezing temperatures should be avoided. Kaempferia goes dormant in the winter hence the name Resurrection Lily.
