Eugenia involucrata – Cherry of Rio Grande (Email for availability)

This is an evergreen shrub native to southern Brazil. It bears small red fruits that ripen to purple, enjoyed in late Spring to Summer. They have a cherry-like flavor with hints of plum and banana and get sweeter as they ripen, high in vitamins A, B and C. The pretty flowers are white and cream colored and sometimes used for ornamental purposes.

Description

This tree is relatively hardy, tolerating as low as 20 degrees F for brief periods of time. It will be damaged from too much cold, so it is advised to protect it from freezing temperatures. It grows in full sun to part shade and goes dormant in the Winter. Water moderately in warm months, waiting for the top few inches of soil to dry out before watering again.
