Description

Catasetum pileatum ‘Alba’ – The ‘Alba’ variety differs from the other colored varieties of the Catasetum pileatum because they are overall a smaller sized plant however they still produce beautifully large fragrant flowers reaching to be about 10 cm in diameter. The flowers are a yellow-cream colored bloom with small amounts of purple freckled spots. Their blooms have a specific texture, and open very flat. They tend to bloom at the end of their active growth cycle, around the fall and winter time but sometimes their cycles can be off which will cause them to bloom during other times of the year. They grow very well mounted on a wooden plank, and in pots or hanging baskets using well-draining, loose, but potting mix that retains some mixture. You’ll want to give them good air flow to the roots and in the summer season they can benefit being watered at least once a day, especially during hot and dry weather. During their growth cycle you’ll want to give them plenty of light and water to ensure healthy growth. Its best to keep Catasetums dry after their leaves have fallen however they should be watered if their pseudobulbs get too withered. They don’t need to be fertilized until spring when they are being watered regularly again which should be when new growth starts to appear and their new roots are around 2 -4 cm long. Repotting them yearly is recommended no matter what potting soil is being used, and should be done when new growth appears at the bottom of the pseudobulb.
