Hoya aff. burtoniae (giant flowers) (3″ pot)

I received this Hoya a long time ago from the Philippines as Hoya burtoniae. I thought the leaves were a bit different than the typical Hoya sp. aff. burtoniae so I set it aside and waited for it to bloom. When it bloomed, I noticed that the flower clusters were HUGE in comparison to the Hoya sp. aff burtoniae on the market. The flower cluster can be as wide as the palm of your hand. I have never seen this for sale. Very interesting.
Last two photos show comparison between this “giant” and the regular H. sp. aff burtoniae. This one has both larger flowers and leaves.

Ships in 3″ pot. Photo #2 ONLY, shows an example on size plant for sale.
Our plants are grown outside in FL; imperfections/blemishes are possible.

Description

This Hoya was sold to me from a vendor in The Philippines as Hoya burtoniae. I compared it to the Hoya burtoniae that I already had and it has some differences.

This is a really strong hoya that grows well for me. Other hoyas sold to me as H. burtoniae were weak and didn’t grow so easily.
The new growth is a little bit pubescent, but we noticed that the leaves are less fuzzy with age.
It forms a very spread out umbel of flowers that are dark maroon/burgundy in color with maroon/burgundy and yellow star corona. The flowers have a delicious sweet butterscotch scent. The individual flowers do not touch each other like they do for most hoya flowers and it reminds me of a spider. The flowers can be seen many times on established plants.
The flowers are more purple and are larger than Ds-70.
A pretty and neat Philippine native hoya that is rarely offered.

We grow our hoyas outside in south FL in filtered light. They are only watered about once a week when they are dry. We protect very well from cold temperatures, very tropical!

All photos were taken of our mature mother plants in bloom, not of the young plants for sale.
