Description
Peacock Gingers are dormant in the winter time. In the spring time, white with purple flowers start to emerge from the soil first. The flowers and leaves are not seen at the same time on this species. It is a really unusual thing to see and will have everyone stopping and wondering what is coming out of the pot! After the plant is finished flowering, large light green, gorgeous leaves emerge. The leaves have a nice dark green pattern on them and the leaves are also burgundy on the underside. Peacock gingers like to be grown in shade and they like to be kept dry in winter and slightly moist in summer. They can take temperatures to about low 30’s. If you live in a cold climate, you can dig up the rhizome in the winter and store it inside in a dry place. Plant again in the spring. This is a fairly easy plant to grow and a really nice foliage plant. You do not see it offered too often either.
