Description

Bulbophyllum bootanoides, also known as Bulbophyllum frostii – is a mini-miniature sized orchid, native to Vietnam, but can also be found more rarely in Thailand. They grow naturally in evergreen lowland forests where the elevations are around 4700 – 4900 feet. The springtime blooming flowers are glossy, with dark-red, & yellow-cream colors. They can have from one to three flowers and measure about 2.5 cm wide. The new flowers bloom from matured, olive green, compressed, clustered pseudobulbs. Although they do not have a pleasant smell, the flowers are super pretty, and unique for their colors and shape that resembles a Dutch wooden shoe. They should be kept in bright indirect light as they do not tolerate direct sunlight. Sphagnum moss, fine bark, or mounting them are all great methods for potting. They like to be kept moist in the summertime, so be sure to not let their potting medium dry out. This species does not necessarily need a rest period so it can get watered regularly, however in the winter season if the plant has slowed in growth, it may be best to reduce the watering especially if the temperatures are cooler than your normal summer ones, just be sure to never let the plant become completely dry. If reduced watering becomes necessary, reduce or completely eliminate fertilizing as well until regular watering is started again. They also require good air circulation.
