Description

This is a tropical fruit tree or shrub sold for the delicious cherries it produces. The fruit has an extremely high concentration of vitamin C, up to 65 times more than an orange! These are very good for your health! The bright red fruit can be seen on mature plants on and off through out the year in tropical climates.
It also produces clusters of small but pretty pink flowers on and off through out the warm months.
If you live in a tropical climate and will be planting it in the ground, it is a good idea to keep the plant trimmed, perhaps around 6′-7′ in order to make it easy for people to pick the cherries. They also make good container specimens, but require more maintenance. Trees in the ground require little care once established. They like full to partial sun, medium water (slightly moist in summer, drier winters), and can tolerant freezing temperatures for a short period of time.
During the winter, the Malpighia slows down and doesn’t look very good. Keep it a little dry during this time.
