Description

Hoya imperialis will produce some of the largest individual flowers in the Hoya species. The spectacular flowers are pretty shades of pink with white corona or white with pink mix corona. I would not say H. imperialis is an early bloomer, but I have heard claims of people getting it to bloom in less than 2 years.

You will feel rewarded when you see these beauties and they definitely have that “wow factor” that you can show off. Once it is mature to bloom, it is a frequent bloomer. The flowers also smell amazing in the evening.

This grows into a large vine compared with other Hoyas. The leaves are green with wavy edges and get about 4″ long by 2″ wide. It can be grown like many others hoyas in hanging baskets, but I prefer growing large Hoyas in a clay pot with a trellis. Since Hoyas are likely to bloom earlier and more often in smaller pots, don’t use a pot that is too big. Smaller pots will also dry out faster which is very important for Hoyas.

I grow this Hoya easily, outside year round in S. FL and I keep it above 60 degrees F. We allow the soil to dry out before it gets watered again. I would recommend this species for someone with some experience with growing other hoyas and also a patient Hoya grower when it comes to flowers.

FAMILY : Apocynaceae
MATURE SIZE : 3′ – 4′
LIGHT REQUIREMENTS : bright shade/filtered light
WATER REQUIREMENTS : allow soil to dry between watering
MIN. TEMP. : low 60’s F
FLOWER : spring on mature plants, very fragrant flowers at night

Hoya imperialis tends to develop black dots on some leaves from living outside in south FL at our nursery. The spots are not a disease and will not affect the plants health. The new growth will be clean if you grow in a different climate.

All pictures were taken of our mature mother plants in bloom, not the plants for sale.
