Acanthus montanus – Bears Breech – Mountain Thistle (4″ pot)

This is an unusual tropical perennial that has interesting incised foliage/leaves. The mottled pattern reminds us of an alligator skin. It produces bold, showy, pink flower spikes in the summer to fall. This is a cold hardy tropical plant.

Ships in 4″ pot. This plant has thorns.

Also known as African mountain acanthus, False Thistle, Bear’s breech, Mountain Thistle, and Alligator Plant. This is an unusual perennial for filtered light that has interesting foliage. The incised leaves are bumpy, resembling an alligator’s skin and the foliage is also very thorny. It is quite the show stopper plant at our plant shows.
It produces tall spikes of showy pink flowers in the summer to fall that are also thorny.
I know that it is cold hardy to zone 9, perhaps even lower.
